Quiz group – June 2024

After a four week break, the group re-convened on the 3rd June. It was good to share, getting the brain ticking over as the members ably answered the questions that I had set. There were six wide ranging subjects; Arch nemesis, Instruments, That’s grand, General knowledge, What a day and Any old Iron! Would you have remembered that:

  • Athens was the arch nemesis of Sparta
  • Edward 8th played the bagpipes
  • There were 23 formula 1 grand prix races in 2023
  • One might attempt a Sicilian defence when playing  game of chess
  • John Wyndham wrote ‘The day of the Triffids’
  • Iron Oxide is a chemical name for rust

Because of  two jokers played, the highest scoring round was That’s Grand! However, taking  the jokers out, ‘Any old iron’ would have topped the bill. This said, let’s not mention about Instruments!

Only two points separated the top two teams and then only two points separated the third and fourth teams; so it was close all round. It’s all good fun and fellowship, whatever the scores.

Our second quiz in June looked at the themes of British Olympic Golds, Finland, Various worlds, Mind your back, General knowledge and All Q’d up.

So…

  • In which sport did Pete Wilson get a gold?
  • What are the three countries that border Finland?
  • World domination is the objective of which board game?
  • The back street boys were the top selling boys band in which decade?
  • What does a person with Munchausen syndrome pretend to be?
  • Quintin Hogg served twice in which notable position?

There was a winner, with two teams tying in second place. The quiz results indicated that the knowledge is good when it comes to British Olympic Golds but there is a need to  brush up on various worlds. Perhaps the quizzers should ask  Dr Who for a trip in his tardis.

Our quizzes in July are scheduled to take place on Mondays 8th and 22nd July and you are always welcome to join us.
