Quiz group – April/May 2025
We met twice this month and in the first quiz we welcomed Sue, a new member. At the same time, we said cheerio to Geoff, who has been a very regular quizzer. We hope he finds a local u3a to attend where he has moved to.
The first quiz majored on ‘In service, Apples, General Knowledge, Sporting life, Geography of sorts and Captains’.
Taking away the joker points, the strongest round was the ‘In Service’ one. General Knowledge appears to have been the hardest round. How would you have fared?
- Samwise Gamgee was whose humble gardener?
- What are pink fir apples?
- Which rank of peerage is directly below a Duke?
- Which month sees the start of the grouse shooting season?
- In which present day country is the ancient city of Troy?
- What was the first name of Captain Von Trapp in the ‘Sound of Music?’
So did you attain a six out of six, without googling?
Our six themes for the second encounter were ‘Numbers up, Trains, Nicknames, General knowledge, Fair enough and ‘A’ Capital’.
Would you have known that:
- 8 is the single digit number that the Chinese consider lucky
- The UK’s longest direct rail service is between Aberdeen and Penzance
- John McEnroe had the nickname of Motormouth
- The Independent newspaper was first published on the 7th October 1986
- The Fair Isle is most famous for its knitwear
- Asmara is the capital of Eritrea?
So how did the quizzers get on? Well, top of the pops was the Train round and the booby prize went to General Knowledge. It was a high scoring quiz with 2 maximum points and fours nines out of 10.
We are a fun group and why not join us sometime?
Exceptionally, in May our two quizzes will be held on Tuesdays the 6th and the 20th.
