Page Turners – July 2022

The Page Turners book for June was ‘The New Neighbours‘ by Diney Costeloe. Although this author has written over twenty fiction books during her seventy-year career, she was new to most of us. This book, published in 2001, tells what happens when one of the houses in a cul-de-sac is sold and converted into a student house.

We all enjoyed this easy-to-read book and became engrossed in the lives of the different families in the small community. There was a kindly old lady, an interfering busybody, divorce, affairs, sex, drugs, parties, assaults, teenage pregnancy – in fact everything you would expect in a soap opera! We enjoyed the mix of characters and the way in which different chapters concentrated on different people’s stories. It was not as challenging as some of our previous reads but is pacy and well written and would be a good one to take on holiday. We will also be looking out for other books by the same author.

As always the themes in the book led to wide ranging discussions about our lives and the world in general and a good time was had by all. We finished by proving our Girl Power credentials – one of us had a flat tyre, another had a foot pump and knew how to use it and between us we managed to get the afflicted motorist home!

The next meeting will be on Thursday 28th July when we will be discussing ‘Lark Rise‘ by Flora Thompson and making choices for future meetings.
