Irene Nemirovski: All Our Worldly Goods (June 2019)

This book was a translation from French by Sandra Smith. It is the story of a husband and wife who married for love in defiance of their families. A family saga depicting the social background of provincial France with all the snobberies, prejudices and gossip of the bourgeois.  The general opinion of the group was, that it was beautifully written and well worth reading.

“I found this story bitter-sweet, inspiring and one that gave a strong message of hope. The author describes the sights, experiences and emotions of a family growing up through generations in France during social change, horrifying events of wars yet steadfastness . The characters were portrayed so strongly that I felt I knew them personally and the background was painted so vividly that I could almost smell and hear the fear and experience their joys and sorrows. A fascinating and thought provoking read which I enjoyed.
