Adventure group – Top of the tower trip

Due to popular demand an extra date has been arranged for the tower trip: Friday 15th December from 10am.  All other details are as below.

In November we will be scaling the heights with a climb to the top of St Gregory’s church tower.

Here’s what you need to know:

Nature of activity Visit to the top of St Gregory’s church tower to see the views and have a short go at ringing a bell.

Date and start time Thursday 23rd November 2pm
Duration Approximately 2 hours
Cost £2 per person donation to St Gregory’s Bell Maintenance Fund.
Cost includes A trip to the top of the church tower to admire the views. On the way up the tower participants will be able to view the eight bells. There will be a talk on bellringing, an opportunity to see how a bell is rung and for each person to have a short go with one to one guidance.
Payment Pay on the day in cash.
Deadline for commitment Please book your place by emailing Deborah via  adventure@u3a.dawlish.info no later than 17th November.
Cancellation policy If organisers need to cancel then another date will be arranged. If participants are unable to attend they will not be charged.
Procedure for notifying group if provider cancels Participants who have booked will be emailed and a notice will be placed on the Adventure Group website.
Level of fitness required or any particular skills (you must satisfy yourself that you are physically able to participate in the activity). Ability to climb 85 steps of steep and uneven spiral stone staircase. Additionally those who wish to have a go at bellringing will need to be able to stand unaided and raise both arms above their head to pull a rope.
Personal medical conditions If you have any medical conditions that might affect your ability to participate then you should declare this to the Ringing Master on arrival.
Disclaimer Please note that whilst the u3a organisers are concerned for everyone’s welfare, by taking part in this activity you should recognise that your safety is your own responsibility.
Appropriate footwear & clothing Sensible shoes for climbing the spiral staircase. Warm and possibly wet weather clothing for the roof of the tower.
Storage of personal belongings No storage is provided. Participants should bring the minimum amount of belongings with them to make climbing the stairs as easy as possible.
Toilet / refreshment facilities Toilets are available in the church. Refreshments will not be available.
Meeting point At the main doors to the church (just inside if it is raining).
Public transport and car parking facilities There is on street car parking near the church.

The 186 bus between Dawlish and Sainsbury’s travels along Church Street.

COVID-19 Although COVID rules have been relaxed, we ask group members to respect each others’ personal space. It is recommended that you take hand sanitiser.
