
Adventure Group – Orienteering at Killerton
Killerton is a National Trust property approximately seven miles to the north east of Exeter. It offers several self led orienteering courses ranging from Beginners to Advanced. We will be tackling the Beginners’ “Yellow” course.

Cost | The Beginners’ orienteering course is free. It takes place in Killerton’s Front Park which is accessible from a public footpath and outside the pay barrier for the National Trust property. The cafe and toilets are similarly accessible without payment for entry.
Optional entrance to Killerton House and grounds, for those who want to make a day of it, is free to National Trust members or £15 per adult. |
Equipment provided | Participants will need an orienteering map, available from Miggie or downloaded in advance from Go Orienteering.
(If you download the map in advance please select Killerton Yellow (Beginners) 1:5000) A compass is not essential because you will be navigating from one control post to another following the guidance given on the orienteering map. If you wish to take a compass to assist with orientating the map then please do. |
Deadline for commitment | Please contact Miggie by Monday 30th September to book your place on one of the two days. |
Cancellation policy | It would be helpful if individuals needing to drop out could let Miggie know ASAP by email. |
Procedure for notifying group if provider cancels | In the event of cancellation (eg due to bad weather) I will send an email to all those who have booked and update the details on the website.
Please check the website before you leave in case of last minute cancellation. |
Level of fitness required or any particular skills (you must satisfy yourself that you are physically able to participate in the activity). | Ability to walk on uneven ground (mostly grassland) for approximately 1.3 miles. |
Personal medical conditions | If you have any medical conditions that might affect your ability to participate in the activity then you should declare this to the instructor on arrival. |

Appropriate footwear & clothing | Appropriate outdoor clothing for the weather on the day. Long trousers are recommended for protection against brambles, stinging nettles and ticks. Stout shoes, walking boots or similar. Note that if there has been significant rainfall before we go the course may be quite wet. |
Storage of personal belongings | Please leave valuables at home. |
Toilet / refreshment facilities | There are toilets and a cafe on site. |
Public transport and car parking facilities | Car parking is available on site. It is free for National Trust members but non NT members must pay.
We encourage car sharing if possible. Please let Miggie know if you can offer or need a lift. |
Meeting point | In the cobbled courtyard near the main reception. (From the car park walk past the yellow toilet block and follow signs to reception.)
We will start here so participants can collect their maps and take a look at them together before starting the course. It is out of sight of the course itself so small groups can leave at timed intervals if they choose. |
