Adventure Group – Sailing

For our next adventure we will be taking to the water for a sailing taster session with SeaSports Southwest in Teignmouth.  If you wish to take part please contact the organiser.

Here’s what you need to know:

Please try to arrive at least 15 mins early to give yourself time to don your wetsuit etc.
Duration 3 hours
Cost, including deposit required £50 per person
Cost includes Beginner group taster session for up to six people per instructor.  Cost includes full instruction and all equipment needed.
The instruction will include a safety and familiarisation session onshore then sailing time on the water in the estuary area, with the instructor guiding through the lesson from a safety boat.
Please note, for safety reasons, we will be allocated a boat between two, with one person going out at a time (it appears that six of us going in different directions might be problematic).

Deadline for commitment £25 deposit per person to be paid to Dawlish and District u3a Treasurer by 12 noon Wednesday 20th April

Deadline for payment in full The balance of £25 should be paid to Dawlish and District u3a Treasurer by 12 noon Monday 25th April.
Cancellation policy “More than 4 weeks prior to course loss of deposit only
Between 2 and 4 weeks 50% of the course fee
Between 2 and 1 week 75% of the course fee
Less than 1-week full payment. In the case of nonattendance then a refund will not be available.”
SeaSports also have a Covid-19 reschedule guarantee.
Procedure for notifying group if provider cancels In the event of cancellation I will send an email to all those who have booked and update the details on the website.  Please check the website on the morning of the activity in case of last minute cancellation.
Level of fitness required or any particular skills (you must satisfy yourself that you are physically able to participate in the activity). From the SeaSports terms & conditions:

“All participants should be water confident if they are not able to swim. All participants must sure they can recover themselves back into the craft used on the activity booked. All participants must complete and accept the medical disclaimer on the booking form to partake in activities. All participants must wear appropriate personal floatation when on the water – there are no exceptions.”

Personal medical conditions If you have any medical conditions that might affect your ability to sail then you should declare this to SeaSports on arrival.
Disclaimer Please note that whilst the u3a organisers are concerned for everyone’s welfare, by taking part in this activity you should recognise that your safety is your own responsibility.
Appropriate footwear & clothing We are asked to bring the following:

  • Hand sanitiser and anti-bacterial wipes face mask and gloves if you require them.
  • Warm clothing. Even in warm weather a fleece or something similar can feel very welcome when you come off the water.
  • Suitable footwear to get wet – old trainers or wetsuit boots are ideal (Wellingtons are not suitable).
  • A towel and swimwear (to save time you may wish to arrive in your swimwear).
  • Sun cream and hats.

If you wear glasses, I recommend bringing an elasticated cord to attach them to your head during the sailing.

Lockers are available for valuables (though you are advised not to bring these if possible).  Clothing may be left onsite.

Toilet facilities / refreshments A toilet is available onsite, as are showers and separate changing rooms for men and women.

Coffee is included in the price.

Equipment provided The boats used are Laser Picos, which are “small easy-to-handle single-handed vessels”.  Wetsuits, buoyancy aids (and spray jackets if required) are provided and included in the price.
Meeting point Outside SeaSports.
Public transport and car parking facilities The nearest public car park is Quay Rd, Teignmouth TQ14 8EL, a short walk away from SW Seasports base on Teignmouth back beach. There is a charge for parking.

Public transport is available from Dawlish to Teignmouth but if you need or can offer a lift please contact the organiser.

COVID-19 SeaSports have told us
“We ask that all customers take a lateral flow test before attending their course. (For more details, please see terms and conditions).
Please bring a mask and any other PPE if required (hand sanitizer or gloves)”.
