Adventure Group – Navigation skills on Dartmoor

Do you want to take your walking to a new level by learning how to navigate with map and compass?

Then this is the adventure for you!

Nature of activity Navigation Skills Training on Dartmoor with Discover Dartmoor
Adventure includes

 

An afternoon out and about on Dartmoor learning the fundamental skills needed to navigate using a map and compass. This will be a led group walk for between 4 and 6 participants over 3-4 miles during which we’ll learn:

  • Why a map makes a better navigation tool than a phone
  • Common map symbols
  • How to measure distances
  • How to pace a walk and keep time
  • How to orientate a map
  • Taking a compass bearing and following it
  • What to do if you find yourself in an emergency situation.

Cheque payments:
Bank transfers are preferred but if you wish to pay by cheque please ensure the Treasurer has your cheque in sufficient time for it to clear by the deadline.

Cancellation policy For participants, this activity is non-refundable after the payment deadline unless you can find someone else to take your place. Please let Phil know as soon as possible if you need to withdraw.

In the unlikely event of the provider cancelling then there will be refunds.

Procedure for notifying group if provider cancels In the event of cancellation Phil will send an email to all those who have booked and update the details on the website. 

Please check the website before you leave in case of last minute cancellation.

Level of fitness required or any particular skills (you must satisfy yourself that you are physically able to participate in the activity). Participants should be generally fit and have had some experience of outdoor walking/hiking across uneven terrain.
Personal medical conditions Participants are responsible for declaring any relevant medical conditions to Discover Dartmoor before participating and ensuring for themselves they are fit to participate.
Disclaimer Please note that whilst the u3a organisers are concerned for everyone’s welfare, by taking part in this activity you should recognise that your safety is your own responsibility.
Appropriate footwear & clothing Suitable clothing for an outdoor walk on Dartmoor. Participants should use the layering system for clothing (base, middle and outer). A hat, gloves, suntan cream, lip salve should be brought for use as needed. Hiking boots with proper support should be worn. A suitable rucksack to carry clothing and accessories/refreshments will be needed.

Storage of personal belongings No storage is provided.
Toilet / refreshment facilities “DD aims to start and finish each event at public toilets. Once out on the walk there will be lots of breaks and there’s always somewhere to hide behind a rock! Remember to bring toilet paper if required and a bag to take any waste home.
You should bring your own food and drink such as a sandwich, fruit, and chocolate. You must bring sufficient water to drink and, if you wish, a flask with a hot drink.”
Public transport and car parking facilities Parking is available at Belstone car park, on the northern outskirts of the village of the village.

We encourage car sharing if possible. Contact Phil if you need help to make suitable arrangements.
