Adventure group – Exeter Cathedral roof tour

For July’s adventure we’ll be scaling the heights again, this time with a walking tour of Exeter Cathedral’s roof.

This is what you need to know.

Nature of activity A tour of the cathedral’s roof void and (weather permitting) onto the roof of the North Tower.

Meeting point We will meet at the Cathedral’s Entry Desk.

Please be there 15 minutes before the start of the tour.

Cost £11 per person
Cost includes “This fascinating behind-the-scenes tour takes you into the roof void, high above the Nave, the South Tower, the Lead Room, the Ringing Chamber and then through the spaces in the North Tower. If weather permits, we extend the tour out onto the roof of the North Tower to enjoy some of the best views of Exeter (and beyond).” (Source)
Deadline for commitment Adventure group members have already indicated their interest in this adventure.  If you have not done so, and wish to join us, please contact Miggie ASAP to see if there is a place available on your preferred date.

Please note, it is really important that you add the reference so our Treasurer knows what the funds are for.

Cheque payments:
Bank transfers are preferred but if you wish to pay by cheque please ensure the Treasurer has your cheque in sufficient time for it to clear by the deadline.

Cancellation policy This activity is non-refundable after the payment deadline unless you can find someone else to take your place.
Procedure for notifying group if provider cancels In the event of cancellation I will send an email to all those who have booked and update the details on the website. 

Please check the website before you leave in case of last minute cancellation.

Level of fitness required or any particular skills (you must satisfy yourself that you are physically able to participate in the activity). IMPORTANT:
“There are over 150 steps to the roof. If you suffer from a health condition such as heart problems, breathing difficulties, claustrophobia, vertigo etc. this tour is not recommended.” (Source)
Personal medical conditions If you have any medical conditions that might affect your ability to participate in the activity then you should declare this to the instructor on arrival.
Disclaimer Please note that whilst the u3a organisers are concerned for everyone’s welfare, by taking part in this activity you should recognise that your safety is your own responsibility.
Appropriate footwear & clothing Weather appropriate outerwear, including hats and sunscreen if needed.
“Footwear: The stairs are steep, narrow and uneven, it is essential that suitable footwear is worn. Persons wearing high heels, flip flops or with bare feet will not be permitted on the tour. Sandals must be of a type secured front and back. Please do not wear shoes with metal protectors on the bottom, as these are liable to damage the building fabric. The Guide’s decision on suitability is final.” (Source)
Storage of personal belongings “Backpacks, bulky bags or luggage cannot be accommodated on the tour, we have no storage facilities within the Cathedral so please do not bring these items with you.”   (Source)
Toilet / refreshment facilities Toilets are available in the Cathedral (but not on the roof!). Purchases from the Ten Fifty Cafe van outside the cathedral contribute to conversation work in the building.
Public transport and car parking facilities Regular trains and buses run between Teignmouth, Dawlish and Exeter.

If you are travelling by car we encourage car sharing. Parking is available at Matford Park and Ride and in various city centre locations.
