French conversation – January 2021

At its last meeting before Christmas the group discussed favourite Carols and Christmas Songs. I wonder if your favourite is included in what was shared.

For Carols we had:

  • The Messiah (‘For unto us a son is born’)
  • O Holy night (‘Minuit Chretien’)
  • Come all ye faithful (‘Adeste Fideles’)
  • Silent Night (‘Douce Nuit’)
  • Angels from the realms of glory (‘Les anges dans nos campagnes’)
  • In the Bleak Mid Winter
  • O little town of Bethlehem
  • Hark the herald angels sing (‘Ecoutez le chant des anges’)
  • Il est ne le divin enfant
  • The three Kings from Persia
  • Mary’s Boy child

Mention was also made of Benjamin Britten’s ‘Ceremony of carols’.

Our Christmas song favourites were:

  • Walking in the air
  • Scarlet ribbons
  • A Christmas Carol by Tom Lehrer
  • Petit Papa Noel
  • Have yourself a very merry Christmas
  • So here it is Merry Christmas
  • All I want for Christmas is my two front teeth
  • Last Christmas
  • All I want for Christmas is you.

The group even listed to some music or attempted singing French songs such as ‘Il est ne’ and ‘Petit Papa Noel’.

The next meetings will be held on Thursday 7th and 21st January at 10.30am via zoom.  The topic for the 7th will be ‘my holiday rollover’ (where we should have gone in 2020 and hopefully will this year) and for the 21st it will be ‘if you were in a circus, which character would you be?’.

We have had 3 new members in the Autumn and we hope more U3A members might take the plunge and join in the fun.
