Quiz group – July/August 2024
We met on the 8th and 22nd July with some challenging subjects that needed answering. The first batch on the 8th were the 11th and 12th centuries, Plant ingredients, Periodic table elements, Words that are animals, Blackpool and General Knowledge.
Because of the jokers played, the forte was the General Knowledge round and the hardest for gathering points was not Blackpool but words that are animals. This said, there was only a point difference so perhaps a u3a trip to the North West should be on the horizon.
Taking away the joker points the main plant ingredients round would have been the best with one team gaining a 10 out of 10.
So would you have found the answers to the following questions?
- What is the present day name of Vinland; a settlement set up in 1001?
- What is the main ingredient of Dal?
- Name the chemical element between Silicon and Tin
- What is the animal that is linked to a slang word for heroine?
- Blackpool is home to how many Victorian piers?
- Name the four children who entered the wardrobe in the Chronicles of Narnia
Our second set of questions were based on the themes of General Knowledge, Romantic couples, People with place names, Film stars, Wanted for crimes and Hs. Because of the jokers played, the people with place names was the best score. However, without the jokers, the romantic couples would have won the day. In fact, one team got a 10 out of 10 for that round. ‘Love is a may splendid thing…’ Being a group full of such law abiding citizens, no wonder the members were not aware of those who are wanted for crimes!
Here’s a snap shot of the quiz:
- The capital of Puerto Rico is San Juan
- Bonnie Parker was romantically involved with Clyde Barrow
- The Spider Man actor with a place name was Tom Holland
- Lee Marvin starred in the films The Dirty Dozen and Paint your Wagon
- Bilbo Baggins stole Gollum’s ring (Lord of the Rings)
- Harry Houdini was born in Hungary
So there you have it and it was a pleasure to have a new member join us for the quiz. Everyone is welcome!
We will be meeting next on the 12th August and perhaps on the 26th August if there are enough free to play (it is the Bank Holiday Monday), then on the 2nd and 23rd September.
