Getting more from your u3a membership: online learning

John Vick, Chair of Dawlish & District u3a, writes:

For most of us, our lives in the u3a is mainly focused on what we are doing in Dawlish and with members who are our friends.  That is heart of our organisation and long may it continue.  However, there can be much more to u3a membership – and it is mostly free and extremely accessible.

If you visit the national u3a website and follow a few clicks you will find information about the wealth of opportunities available to us all – and they are mostly free to members.  As an example, the Online Learning Events include free online talks, workshops and courses. Most are led by fellow members, sharing their expertise with additional talks from notable speakers and organisations.  Information about how to take part is given on the website.  Here is a sample of just some of the forthcoming events:

  • A Relaxed Introduction to Artificial Intelligence
  • Mindfulness and Meditation
  • Secrets of the Human Brain: Talk Four – Brain Drugs and Medicines
  • The Assassination of President Kennedy
  • What the future changes in landlines will mean for you
  • Poverty: A Sociological Perspective
  • Understanding online content, misinformation and disinformation
  • Turner and Impressionism
  • A life living and exploring with the most exciting wildlife on Galapagos
  • Exploring World Faiths: Chaplaincy
  • From the Soviet Gulag to Arnhem
  • Laughter Yoga
  • Mass Extinctions: Causes and Consequences
  • The History of the 16th Century Ruff (by the costume designer for Wolf Hall)

You can find out what these are all about by visiting the appropriate page on the website.

The Third Age Matters magazine also gives information about what is happening around the country, and what other opportunities are available to us.  Our membership subscription really is remarkable value when you see what is available to us.  Why not give some of these a try – and let us know what you think.
