Discussion Group – January/February 2025

The Discussion group met on 15th January, after a long gap. With a few apologies, there were enough of us to debate the topics of choice of all those present. These included Mrs. Thatcher’s legacy, affecting the current housing situation, the destruction of trade unions, closure of mines (coal being considered a viable source of energy if carbon emissions were controlled), and in general, the unleashed and unchecked development of capitalism and greed.

Another topic was the nefarious aspects of the Internet, including the immense energy consumption it involves, and our increasing dependence on online tools, which exacerbate it. We also mentioned the danger of the internet of things, and concluded that people should exercise more control over their choices. Again, greed was mentioned and a degree of inertia in the laxity of adopting new technologies, allowing them to take control over us.

When talking about Education, we mentioned the burning of books and the creation of an over-sensitised young generation of “snowflakes”, the controversy over free speech and the increased reliance on internet and social media platforms leading to a weakening of moral values.

We decided to develop these topics and others at our next meeting on 12th February. Members were encouraged to send in suggestions for topics ahead of time.
