Dawlish & District u3a members flying high
The Dawlish & District u3a Adventure Group gives members the opportunity to try things they have never done before. Paddle boarding, high ropes walking, foot golf, a tour of Brixham fish market, line dancing, escape rooms, sea kayaking are just some of the adventures members have enjoyed, so it came as no surprise that there was high demand for the latest venture – gliding.
Fifteen members made the journey to Devon and Somerset Gliding Club on a perfect summer’s evening. Conditions were ideal to give novice gliders an experience to remember. Everyone had a safety briefing and were issued with parachutes – with the reassuring advice that there was no chance that they would not be needed!
In the safe hands of expert pilots, the gliders were launched with a winch to a height of about 1100 feet. The views of Devon’s countryside and coast line were perfect. Those who wished to take control of the glider were able to do so – but were usually pleased to hand back control to the pilot!
The ‘adventurers’ all found it a fantastic experience, not only being in the air themselves but also watching other members have such a wonderful time and sharing their excitement. Demand for this event far outstripped demand, so it is quite possible that another opportunity to glide will be organised before too long, so no-one misses out.
The future programme is planned by members who have come up with an impressive variety of suggestions. The next adventure keeps members feet firmly on the ground – joining Exeter’s Medieval Trail.
