Come and find out about the u3a!
Dawlish & District u3a members are keen to tell everyone about why their organisation makes such a difference to their lives – and they want others to have the same experience. From Tuesday 13th September, members will be available to talk to local people about the many opportunities open to them in the u3a. On Tuesday 13th, Thursday 15th and Friday 16th September, there will be an exhibition and chance to meet members in the Dawlish Library. On Wednesday 14th September, there will be a stand outside the Strand Centre when members will again be available to meet members of the public. This is a prelude to the national u3a’s week of activities across the country later in the month.
Dawlish & District u3a boasts over 20 interest groups including Art Appreciation, Badminton, French Conversation, Adventure Group, Natural History, Great Lives, two book clubs, Strollers, Boules, Beer & Skittles, a Discussion Group, Gardens & Gateaux and Wine Appreciation. There are also opportunities where members can just meet for Tea and Chat, while perhaps enjoying playing some board games. Participation in these groups provides opportunities to learn from each other while enjoying a full and active social life. The philosophy is all about learning from each other, having fun and enjoying an active, lively social life.
Membership is open to anyone who is no longer in full time employment. The annual subscription is a very modest £15 per annum. The u3a’s exhibition is part of Dawlish Library’s programme for community groups to raise awareness of opportunities for local people to enjoy ‘Now Summer is Over’. Librarian Corina Skerritt is keen to promote the Library as a place not just to borrow books but also as a focus for community activities of all kinds. She spoke to u3a members at their recent monthly meeting, and even regular library users were surprised to learn more about the huge range of services available to them. Apart from the books on the open shelves, library users have access to all the other libraries across the region. There is a wide range of large print books, as well as audio books and DVDs. Technology allows us to borrow and return books easily, to renew and order books, and also explore the catalogue online. Corina introduced members to ‘Libby’, an app which gives readers access to thousands of e-books which we can access remotely and read on a tablet or other device – all free of charge. Corina is looking forward to welcoming you in the weeks ahead so you can see for yourself.
Dawlish & District u3a has over 150 members who meet monthly to listen to speakers on a diverse range of subjects, and to enjoy each other’s company. In addition, about 20 interest groups meet throughout the month to pursue subjects as varied as Great Lives, Art Appreciation, French Conversation, Natural History, Wine Appreciation, Scrabble, Painting and Drawing, and Gardens & Gateaux.
