Quiz group – August/September 2026

We met two Mondays on the trot and despite being the holiday season, we were able to continue as normal.

As usual we covered a wide range of subjects and the first zoom saw us tackling questions on Football related, Lanes, British military, Musicals. Raining cats and dogs. Added to those was the regular General Knowledge round.

Musicals topped the scores with General Knowledge lagging far behind.

Here is a taster from each round and would you have known that:

  • Norway topped the medal table at the 2026 Winter Olympics
  • The Bantams is the nickname of Bradford FC
  • The Kirstall Lane End is found in the Headingley Cricket stadium
  • SBS (Special Boat Service) is the naval equivalent of the SAS
  • The line ‘When you’re chewing on life’s gristle, don’t grumble, give a whistle’ is from the musical Spamalot
  • The whiskers of a cat are scientifically known as Vibrissae?

So how about these questions from the second quiz:

  • What is the name of the metal strip found at the bottom of the front wall in squash called?
  • Carson City is the capital of which American state?
  • In the Roman Empire what specifically was a Scutum?
  • What is the longest river in Northern Ireland?
  • Which Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale shares its name with a Harry Potter Book?
  • Hoi Polloi meaning ‘the masses’ comes from which language?

You may have guessed that the round themes were What a racquet, General Knowledge, The Roman Empire, Around the UK,  Hans Christian Andersen and Mind your language.

For the first time ever four jokers were played in the same round: Around the UK. That said, because of the joker points it reached the number 1 spot. However poor Mr Andersen, perhaps the quizzers need to read a few more of his fairy tales!

So on to September when the two quizzes are pencilled in for Mondays the 7th and the 14th.
